The UK will be negotiating with the EU indefinitely, because the EU is its main trading partner. The UK's choices are (1) leave without a deal, and negotiate from pathos; (2) leave with a deal, and negotiate from weakness; (3) don't leave, and negotiate from strength.

Do hope someone who matters in the UK, politically, that is, may know of this, Timothy Snyder, but I suspect one of the first two options may prevail. What a bungled situation--California may as well vote to leave the Union, etc, etc

Unfortunately, it's more realistic than 1. or 2. Legally, the window for 2. is passed & 1. is more harmful than 3. Legally, it's a possible risk that the time for 3. has also passed

Can see the fun/cleverness of one and two. However, don’t get number (3) ‘don't leave, and negotiate from strength’. Poor President Macron has just been humiliated by @akk. Even France is in a position of weakness. #Awkwardhttps://twitter.com/TimothyDSnyder/status/1105011949748842496 …

But France retains its veto in the EU Council whereas UK is about to drop it.
