70 countries have a national
#adaptation plan (#NAP), but less than 40% are tracking its implementation
More attention is needed on the quality of adaptation planning & how effective it is in facilitating #climateaction.#PreCOP26#GST

While the adoption of the
#Glasgow Climate Pact has attracted lots of applause in the#COP26 plenary, the parallel plenary room for observers saw little cause for celebration. The last minute watering down of essential#coal phase out cannot be celebrated. 1.5°C barely alive

(3) Emphasising the need to study how global environmental agreement-making works, including at
#COP26, & the importance of participant observation as a research method. Fantastic team of authors led by@hanshare &@AliceVadrot. New in the@ESG_Journal

(1) Answering: is adaptation taking place? We found 1,682 journal articles that document implemented
#adaptation worldwide. An important evidence base for the respective section in the@IPCC_CH#AR6 WGII (launch: February 2022)

(6) Numerous derivative articles explore specific questions, e.g. on the evidence of adaptation & health, the feasibility of adaptation options in

#adaptation takes place, by whom, in what sector, and against which hazards. We also looked at the potential for transformational adaptation and at evidence of risk reduction.Show this threadThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo -

(3) More than 120 researchers from all continents have screened & analysed all articles published between 2013-2019 in scientific journals for evidence of *implemented* adaptation. The great majority of the adaptation literature is not documenting implementation, but is about...

Countries not aligned with the 1.5°C target "have got to redo their
#NDCs!" -@ClimateEnvoy John Kerry's passionate speech at@GRI_LSE on the way to@COP26. "Adressing the climate crisis is not a hard choice, it's the only choice!"
#Glasgow must keep 1.5 alive!

The difference between measuring GHG emissions and
#adaptation and the pitfalls of adaptation indicators are explained in this 2018 chapter with@pringlepaddy :https://www.researchgate.net/publication/323838261_Pitfalls_and_potential_of_measuring_climate_change_adaptation_through_adaptation_metrics …Show this threadThanks. Quoted today in a news story by
@ClimateHome on measuring global progress on#adaptation (link
). Simplistic metrics like "number of countries with a plan" can be misleading, as I argued in this recent @GRI_LSE commentary:https://www.lse.ac.uk/granthaminstitute/news/beyond-simplistic-metrics-assessing-global-progress-on-adaptation-to-climate-change/ …Show this threadThanks. Including over CAD 10 billion since the Covid-pandemic began. So much for "green recovery". The money would better be spent on decarbonization because if climate action remains rhetoric, these heat extremes will become not a 1/1000 year but a 1/10 year event.

#Canada just experienced its most extreme heat ever recorded with over 50°C & >700 deaths. Meanwhile the Canadian govt continues to spent billions of taxpayers money on oil & gas infrastructure that locks in emissions for decades to come. A fatal mistake. https://www.iisd.org/articles/new-report-canadian-governments-provided-least-cad-23-billion-support-oil-gas-pipelines …pic.twitter.com/FJ6HL0wk0d

In my recent
@GRI_LSE commentary, I similarly argue that simplistic indicators like "number of plans" can convey a false sense of progress when it is actually the quality, leadership and policy traction that matters for#Adaptation planning:https://www.lse.ac.uk/granthaminstitute/news/beyond-simplistic-metrics-assessing-global-progress-on-adaptation-to-climate-change/ …Show this threadThanks.
