Question for UX designers: Are there specialized Bad UX Designers who create these inscrutable privacy settings pages? Or do regular designers create both good UX and bad UX?https://techcrunch.com/2018/04/17/facebook-gdpr-changes/ …

Yes, there is a secret sect of bad UX Designers; I myself, a good Designer is part of the Brotherhood that protects good design, this war has been waged in the shadows for thousands of years. Our symbol? The elegant Triangle, their symbol? a QR code.

In web land at least the role of a UX designer is not to provide a good experience for users. It is to find balance between user need & business need. The two often align, with less user pain = more profit. But as much as it may pain the designer, sometimes they do not align.

From user perspective it would be great to go on an e-commerce site, press a single button, and have the product you want sent to you for free. But that obviously wouldn't fit with the business goals, and the reason UXers are employed is to ensure that business goals are met.

It’s only bad design if you assume the goal was to make it easy to use and understand. I doubt that was the case here...

There's a definite Milgram Experiment feel to working in web development. As a dev or designer you like to feel that you're doing what's good for the user, while management cajoles you into doing what's good for the company. This is the inevitable end result of that dynamic 😕

The golden age of UX and UI was supposed to save us all from bad interactive experiences. Behavior shaping has seen them sometimes corrupted and turned to the dark side. 😨

Im in the fortunate position of only dealing with the backend of UI work and the artists relay the layout. However it does leave a bad taste in my mouth when my code is associated with poor UX. There is no excuse for it ever since the normalisation effect of Web 2.0

Probably the upper levels of the hierarchy force good designers to do bad things. Sort of why websites have auto play video ads. Idk I’m just speculating.
