So wait, they're talking about Git specifically here, but did they just ship an equivalent of FUSE for Windows? That's pretty cool!

Yeah and it seems pretty cool since they allow you to also augment an underlying file system (NTFS) with virtual items etc. I've not yet actually looked at the projlib.dll API though - haven't yet been able to dig up an SDK header for it...

This is great, filesystem performance on Windows is a huge issue for Firefox CI.

Also Microsoft seem to be working on porting GVFS to other platforms, at least they are working on a Mac port at the moment https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/devops/2018/03/15/gvfs-for-mac/ … and hopefully (though I have no evidence) Linux also? Then I'd be truly excited indeed.

this is great, I toyed around before to 'solve' this issue a few years back for large game/vfx assets by making a linux vm with git-annex and samba being a drive mount point to it on the windows side. Quite complicated though and eventually dropped the idea...

Agree! Scary how ‘deep’ MS had to go to make this viable.

Making the file system filter driver generic is a good move. Hate to have to redo most of this work for other version control systems or virtual cloud storage.
