Cross platform with PC had existed for years. One of the reasons it didn't become popular was due to console players being absolutely bdemolished by PC players. Also it make zero sense for a company to lose profits just to allow a few families to enjoy this experience.

Games sell nostalgia all the time. Playing with friends creates this. Also having all players in one server gives games a much longer lifespan. More people playing together is always better for business.
