Valve just made a change to their privacy settings, making games owned by Steam users hidden by default. Steam Spy relied on this information being visible by default and won't be able to operate anymore.https://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/1667896941884942467 …

Being able to see other people's libraries is essential to being able to play with them. This is a core feature of Steam and right now it's broken.https://twitter.com/StegerGames/status/983886953916567553 …

Here, let me redesign this policy for y’all. By default, hide all games publicly, expose all games to friends except for unrated/adult games, allow per-user and per-game override via checkbox to show publicly, show to friends online, or hide from everyone.

Valve has a good attitude in this regard and is simply closing loopholes whose danger is only now being recognized as a result of other companies’ practices being exposed.

Perhaps but it would have been nice for them to consult with their users rather than me finding this out through SteamSpy, thats the exact type of stunt which makes me trust Facebook less because they constantly tweak privacy settings in the background with no warning or consent.

But what is Steam's core function? Outside of the big sales events I spend very little time myself in the Steam Store directly, I spend quite a lot of time connecting and playing with my friends and checking out what they're playing.

I think its evolved over time to become more of a social platform and I would argue strong privacy negatively impacts the community by giving toxic people a veil to hide behind (much the same with Facebook). Im on Steam to make new friends too not just to be in an echo chamber
