Valve just made a change to their privacy settings, making games owned by Steam users hidden by default. Steam Spy relied on this information being visible by default and won't be able to operate anymore.https://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/1667896941884942467 …

A good privacy policy decision by Valve. A physical or digital retailer shouldn’t expose anyone’s purchase history publicly by default.

Users who value privacy above all else simply avoid online services entirely though? I just think using social networks such as this require us to give up some privacy to ensure a better service. As a Steam user of 12 years I got a kick out of sites which play with the numbers

The principle of least privilege should apply. By default, an online service should only expose as much user information as is strictly necessary to perform its core function. Exposing anything more should be opt-in.

This was always a compromise between being able to play with other people and privacy. It seems they moved towards privacy now.

I don't see how more privacy prevents people playing with each other. My profile used to be "public", that doesn't mean that random people checked it to find out what games to play with me. People I play with are my Steam friends, and they still see my library and what I play.

True but knowing the aggregate for all of this data across other games helps inform product decisions for developers.

It’s one thing to reveal that a tentacle porn game sold 3000 copies, a very different thing to reveal who bought it.

The problem being of course that many companies hide this type of data and use it to lie to employees and interested parties. They could make a popup that asks if you want to opt in to privacy setting next time you launch steam.
