Rather than an answer, here's some advice. Don't go it alone. F/OSS' greatest asset is community. If you have Linux using friends/acquaintances, they'll happily lend a hand. This'll lead to more positive experiences when you bump against things that don't match your expectations.

As a dev, I love using
@openSUSE Tumbleweed. Rolling release, always tested and with btrfs and snapper, I can always roll back if needed. The community is great and refreshingly pragmatic.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I'd also recommend Ubuntu at the moment. I'm exploring other distros, but Ubuntu is an easy-to-use and has the widest support.

I would suggest
@KdeNeon. Basically Ubuntu with the latest KDE packages: https://neon.kde.org/Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

These days it's more about how software is deployed within linux rather than the distros themselves, I would suggest you look at the excellent work on Gnome and flatpak dev tools from
@hergertme, i'm sure he would happily explain the linux dev eco.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Tim, I suppose if we were all honest it's a bit like how long is a piece of string? if there is one thing problematic about Linux, it's choice :)pic.twitter.com/fy0Spg6P4t

Scanning
@DistroWatch is always a good policy, plenty of variety and opinions. At least about 307 live distributions at the moment. They tend to fall into families, @debian/Ubuntu derived,@RedHatNews/@CentOS,@archlinux based,@gentoo or independents.pic.twitter.com/ZXXZtFdNc9 - 7 more replies

First, Nvidia or AMD? Nvidia: fixed release distro that doesn't get the latest kernels. The Nvidia driver often doesn't like new kernels AMD: rolling release distro or fixed release distro with a repo for new versions of Mesa. Mesa and the AMDGPU driver are improving all the time

For development, openSUSE is a great distro. There are tons of great tools for managing your openSUSE installation and you can use the Open Build Service to automatically build and distribute software for all distros. 2 Flavors: Leap (fixed release) and Tumbleweed (rolling)
