How will this work with organized mobs going after someone they don't like who didn't do anything wrong?

In a decentralized system, respectable folks would share blocklists of harassers/bullies and collaborate on moderation through those blocklists, so the goons would disappear from from most everyone’s view. Yet they wouldn’t be censored as you could opt in to reading them.

How to support such a platform?

P2P? Discord is kinda similar, loosely.

Well good news, what you described exists and it's called
@MastodonProject. See https://joinmastodon.org Many game developers are even hanging around@aras_p's http://mastodon.gamedev.place instance, it's a fun place to be in. -
So I still manage to be confused by this. If I signed up to http://mastodon.social originally but now would like to interact with http://mastodon.gamedev.place , how do I do this? Create a 2nd account? Somehow "federate" my account with the instance?

A.k.a pre-FB/Twitter internet: communities formed and self-regulated within message boards, IRC channels, e-mail groups, etc. Sad to see the public debate turn to how social problems can be fixed with centralized censorship rather than open protocols.

Already exists - steemit platform. Open, decentralised, self regulated, content and curation rewards. 2 years + been evolving and growing; dtube, dmania, steepshot, zappl, dmusic, utopian and SMT tokens on the way. Most active + used blockchain by miles.https://www.blocktivity.info

step one: propose an objective function for human collective search (aka purpose). otherwise these networks will always be owned by underpants gnomes.
