Has any programming language defined a data-definition subset which is truly lossless and truly a subset? Something like JSON is to Java, but with rigor. The forward compatibility problem is more subtle than it seems, e.g. as Eric Lippert describes:https://ericlippert.com/2009/05/11/reserved-and-contextual-keywords/ …

        Quoted Lisp S-expressions?

S-expressions are an example! Yet they don't explore the nuances of e.g. text representations of C#/Java class values in the presence of multiple inheritance, in which new fields with identical names can be forward-compatibly added at two points in the inheritance hierarchy.

i gave Scopes such a system; the language is written in the interchange format itself. It is possible to write a lossless implementation that reconstructs the data on write the same way it was put in the tree.

i started to record screencasts about the language and the very first talk is about its notationhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4waNsi5Urg&list=PLWVpbdR2y12c3q_sjbFx3ptSyjEqus4ec&index=1 …

JSON is incredibly useful but also not at all lossless. Class/prototype inheritance isn’t captured just flattened, and type info is lost (e.g. Date objects don’t round trip w/o extra deserialization code).

Imagine “google protocol buffers” built into a languages syntax. Your idea with a dash of future proof. I’d work on that.
