Uniform access principle was considered to be a good thing in OOP. But are there any reasons why would a real developer prefer to be unaware of data vs function difference and all the possible side-effects and costs?

UAP is certainly a mistake in the case of functions that have side-effects or nontrivial cost. There’s nothing uniform about performance, and nothing accessy about modifying global state.
