I actually wrote a while ago a p4->git cheatsheet, the problem I have is not w/easy stuff but when things go wrong I can't disentangle them - and things tend still to go wrong often for me in trivial cases :/

If you care about some external opinion: I observed things don't go well when people go the X → git cheatsheet route. Like "use git like svn" or likely in your case p4. Trying to memorize "patterns" like "if this situation then those incantations" doesn't go well either.

Well said - you really have to establish a mental model of how the workspace, index, and refs work before the commands start to make sense. Framing things in terms of other SCC solutions doesn't accomplish that.

But see - that's the entire problem for me. I'm sure you can become a [insert tech here] wizard and be super productive and a god. I don't care. I simply want my tech not to get in the fucking way of what I'm doing. I want to open a file in the stupidest editor on the planet...

...type some crap like a monkey, and save it, maybe share it with other people. That's all. I don't want to learn VIM, I don't care about nothing other than simple, brain dead simple tools. So. If your shiny tech makes it hard to do simple stuff, it's a fail in my book and it...

...should burn in the flames of hell. Dropbox >>> GIT. P4, which has a terrible UX btw, is still literally LEAPS AND BOUNDS ahead of GIT when it comes to making simple stuff simple. I want to literally punch engineers in the face till they get that UX matters -> PEOPLE MATTER.

So people often say - you don't get it... And I'm like, you know, I'm not entirely brain dead yet, and I'm trying to do a very simple thing. If a non-entirely-brain-dead person finds doing a very simple thing hard, then your tech sucks. :) Anyyyyyyhow. I get rant-y a tiny bit :D

@kenpex I agree with you 100% about Git - it feels like it was designed for aliens. Everything is stressful because I have no mental model of what’s going on.4 replies 0 retweets 5 likes -

Git is the raw database, but needs a front end. It's like trying to book your holiday by typing SQL queries at an airline's server. You probably can do it, but...

Why can’t we just have Dropbox with labels?

Isn't that basically what p4 is?
