I often ask junior interviewees how the score themselves in c++. They say 8-9. So I ask what's "mutable". They don't know ;)

Depends on how you use C++ I guess. If you try to have const where possible, mutable shows up for caches/mutexes fairly often.

Cache is the main reason I use mutable.

It's totally fine to not know mutable, but self scoring oneself 8-9 in c++ maybe lacks understanding of how deep the pit it?

There are plenty of obscure features in the dark corners of c++, mutable isn't one of them
