Because they can and ppl are used to 30% cuts. Same for the App Store and Google Play, no? They could all be 10%, but give up billions? No.

On iOS and Android you don't really have a choice, the store there is such a monopoly, not super fair to compare them IMO.

UE Marketplace is a small service with much higher setup costs amortized per item sold, perhaps 10x higher on volume than is 1000x lower.

If its so small, charge less since you only provide CHECK IN, not constant monitoring of updates which are not even rolled out timely

Honest question: If there was a competitor who charged say 1%, would games be cheaper? Or would publishers keep more profit?

Developers would initially earn more, but soon the competition would drive everyone to reinvest in building better games. Everyone wins.

If Valve lowered the cut to 10% would you then claim that they're abusing their monopoly to outdo their competitors?

Not at all. That would be awesome for developers and gamers, and result in more game investment and lower prices.
