With 256-bit hashes, specifically, it's actually x*2^128 work to find collisions, which may be possible in about 60 years, need SHA512 then

A bit misleading. It is 2^256 x (some work). If work is super tiny, then not secure. Yes we are relying on complex function space :).True.
