Immutable containers have nice subtype relationships: arrays <= ordered dictionaries <= unordered maps <= weak maps <= functions.

Useful. I see Haskell typeclasses as the most powerful and modular implementation of the underlying idea.

Arrays-as-functions is a very lossy embedding. If all you could do with arrays was lookup, they wouldn't be very useful. :)
