What I wonder is, where are Microsoft heroes like Dave Cutler on this? He created Windows NT and then saved it from the Itanium disaster.

my memory is there wasn't much contest. VC++ ia64 backend never got decent codegen, x86_64 good from day 1.

Years in, our itanium dev boxes still were basically space heaters, rarely had a LKG build - totally unusable.
