Here’s another spiteful, passive aggressive Apple policy that won’t stand: banning apps which tell users how to directly pay or subscribe to their services.https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-app-makers-break-their-apps-to-avoid-paying-apple-11593349200?st=8yhxcvllwl7ffcp&reflink=article_imessage_share …

Banning disinformation is one thing, banning true information is quite another! And this is a ban on app creators giving consumers information on how they can make cost-saving purchase decisions.

Such is the nature of a walled garden. Steamworks is another walled garden. It makes it easier for developers to get those features but locks their game to steam. No Man's Sky and Forager are two I've seen end users suffer because of Steamworks exclusivity. No updates on GoG

Walled garden is a great way to put it. Hopefully EOS being cross platform will help pave the way for less Steam "dependency" Right now EGS is a walled garden of its own, you can't self publish there right now. Until that changes, Steam still holds the key to indie self publish

Well that's the thing, EGS is just a store on PC and PC is an open platform. They don't have any APIs that limit what a developer can do. Steam has Steamworks which makes things easier for a developer but is very much anti consumer since it limits how the developer can publish.

I think you have it flipped, steam is very pro consumer as it stands right now. They are anti developer in their high revenue cut, and anti competitive ruling about pricing your game on other stores. Once EGS becomes as open as steam, I'll move my game there! Hoping soon

Steamworks is the place where they're doing damage. Steam input, steam achievements, steam inventories, steam reviews, steam mods, steam multiplayer, all of those features should be wide open on PC, not locked to the store you bought the game on. Look at Forager on GOG.

Ah I see, I think I was thinking too narrowly

There is a lot of good that Steam has done. There is a reason i've got over 700 games on there. I've always been weary of Steamworks though and now a days as games aren't updated on other stores with feature parity, it really looks like i've always had good reasons to be.

Hopefully they’ll open it up. We’d be happy to support Steamworks, Steam friends, etc, on games on the Epic Games Store, which welcomes games using any account systems, any payment processors, any engines, etc.

That'd be amazing! I yearn for days where friends lists use open protocols. Valve should be leading the charge here but it's great that other major players are willing to set examples. GoG is trying to but it just doesn't have developer market share due to the strict no drm req.
