Can anyone share the origin of the Windows naming convention (using PascalCase for functions, and some UPPERCASE_WITH_UNDERSCORES for types)? This came before Dave Cutler and appears to even be pre-Simonyi. @BillGates?

name:type is btw something i found in hindley-milner type inference, so it's a mathematical notation that predates pascal

I wonder if Charles Petzold might know. He seems like the kind of didactic person who might remember when/why conventions would float in when updating learning materials.

Then again, that might even be before his time, too. Mid 80s for him.

Seems like it might have been due to Simonyi originally. Interesting info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camel_case#Computer_programming …

Was it a Gorden Letwin (sp?) invention?

I certainly remember this style being used in examples during my first forays into Pascal on the Atari ST around '88. I've been wedded to it ever since!

...I’m just gonna randomly and pointlessly yell out that whoever invented CamelCase should be ashamed of themselves. Those who smoosh words together without any separation at all are also evil. Httpurlconnection HttpURLConnection HTTPUrlConnection HttpUrlConnection Die.

Yes, a few more characters would be used. Yes. But how much better would life be if these were the only possibilities? The copy-pasting glory. The lack of ambiguity. The determinism, certainty. The nice look. Http_url_connection http_url_connection HTTP_URL_CONNECTION Sigh.
