When we finally replaced these antiques with random access digital storage, we called it an SSD, even though it’s neither a disc (a cylinder) not a drive (a motor).

I dissected a discarded 1996 VCR the other day and was astounded to find two ultrasonic delay lines in it—they provided 64 μs of analog memory to enable accurate phase difference detection for PAL chroma. I'd heard they existed but never seen one in real life!

The reason hard disks rotated internally was because that takes far less energy than rotating the entire data center. I mean it's all about the *physics* and fortunately for you guys, I just don't have time right now to go into more detail.

The only problem with SSDs is they can degrade if they are left powered off too long. In the long run, I'm still betting on clay tablets.
