This is an interesting article, but I'm skeptical that we're going to see a mass migration to tech-fueled hyper consolidated higher ed. Honestly I think the plain collapse of higher ed among the middle and lower class is more likely.https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/05/scott-galloway-future-of-college.html …

I'm an idiot and I'm always wrong about things, but I think a big push towards online education just pulls the mask off at some point. At least within the USA, I think faced with the prospect of increasingly online college education a bunch of people will just ... not go?

I'm also a bit skeptical of big tech's ability to absorb the educational sector. I mean, I certainly think the MIT's and the harvard's of the world will be able to capture the attention of the elite rich self starters.

But I'm skeptical that Google and Facebook can just move into totally disparate sectors and just own those markets. It is really hard for a company to do well at something outside of its core competency. The ones that do well with merging & growing - THAT is their core competency

I'm an idiot and probably wrong about this, there's my dumb 11:53 PM hot take anyways. American college is weird and gonna get weirder, but I think in a way that just makes it become a shell of itself rather than transform into some digital super university for the masses.

I'm not saying a tech company CAN'T succeed at this though, but... probably not specifically Facebook or Google. Maaaaaybe Amazon? Apple seems a weird choice too. But probably just some super well funded organization none of us have been paying attention to is most likely

It’s a sham. World class professors are giving lectures to 40-100 college students with admissions filtered by super strict and increasingly relationship based criteria. Why not just upload the shit to YouTube so everyone can learn from the best?

The organized version of my dumb thoughts is just... the best material for self starters is already out there for free as you say, and self-starters are gonna self start, and then I wonder what even happens to the rest of the American education market once the mask is off?

there should be a fund or patreon-like service where world-class teachers can get paid so they can record their classes and upload them for free in YouTube or similar

Sounds like Khan Academy with better funding.
