It's good for understanding recursion mathematically, because it has pattern matching syntax, which is basically mathematical notation. But like all functional languages, the stack is heavily abstracted away, which makes it hard to understand recursion technically.

When I started coding I must have spent a month understanding multi-dimensional arrays and looping recursively for a flatpack database using Flash+PHP. When I cracked it, I felt like I could take on everything. Then I saw graphics programming.
