And as one reference of hundreds about games doing this prior to EGS' existence:https://www.pcgamer.com/star-wars-battlefront-2-multiplayer-restored-now-with-steamgog-crossplay/ …

Yeah, all multiplayer PC games were completely store-neutral before Steamworks introduced an free multiplayer SDK - which was locked to Steam. The Epic Online Service initiative is just restoring that status quo and making it easy for developers.

Did Battlefront II use Epic Online Services then? Whatever it used, it is clearly a game on Steam which wasn't locked to Steam, along with thousands of others. It sounds like Steamworks is independent of Steam the way EOS is of EGS, and therefore is not a point against Steam.

Right, it’s just games that use Steamworks that are locked in. Developers who write their own matchmaking and friends systems have supported matchmaking across all PC stores all along. Ubisoft games are another example.

Steamworks matchmaking isn’t locked to Steam but friends and social features are. So you can get into a multiplayer game on any store, but you can only get into a game with your friends on Steam.

So what does the label on the EOS friends interface documentation that says "Epic Games Store Only" mean?

Just for reference in case it suddenly changes. https://dev.epicgames.com/docs/services/INT/Interfaces/Friends/index.html … I do expect this is a misunderstanding and "Epic Games Store Only" does not really mean EOS Friends requires EGS. But it'd be nice to have that label explained.pic.twitter.com/uX639YxcPD

The current version of this service is only deployed in games on the Epic Games Store for PC and in select multiplatform games such as Fortnite (7 platforms) and Dauntless (3 platforms). It's opening up more widely later this year, see here:https://dev.epicgames.com/en-US/services

I'm curious how it will be done for. - Communications - Parties Because from my understanding it will ask for a two way informations. EGS -> other store and other store -> EGS. Anyway good luck for develop it and still being extensible in the futur for other use.

The idea is to decouple launching the game from servicing it. So it'll be more like: Game on EGS <-> EOS <-> Game on GOG
