I have no idea the economics of this. I can only imagine that digital gift cards are sold at a slight loss as standard to attract customers who primarily use bricks and mortar stores. Otherwise why would stores bother stocking them for zero profit?

Steam cards are a loss leader for Valve. They eat the costs from them in order to get users into the ecosystem in the hope they buy from the Steam Store directly later. Same as Steam keys. And same as EGS free games, for that matter.

They’re not a loss leader. Retailers and distributors generally are taking a 15% cut of card revenue, which comes out of Valve’s 30% cut. There’s plenty of profit left over there.

Tim, when you say "profit", I think you mean "revenue". Profits are calculated after *all* costs are taken, not just a single source. Don't start this nonsense again. Valve takes a loss on Steam cards and Steam keys, they compensate with revenue from the regular Steam Store.

A loss leader is determined by profit and not revenue. How are steam cards a loss leader? In fact, it’s certainty that there are millions of dollars of steam gift card balances unused - thus that money goes all to Steam.

no new profit is obtained from old wallet, it's just locked, no benefits for anyone not to mention , unless you know specifically the % of revenue steam uses on upkeeping the store, you can not know if the cut retailers get + management/physical codes costs + store upkeep is -

You can infer the retailer’s cut via the lowest negotiated rate of other vendors also selling gift cards at that retailer (ex Applebee’s or Buffalo Wild Wings or even Apple/Google) and those rates are <10%. It’s why it’s still profitable for stores to sell $100 gift cards for $90

The store *selling the card* makes a profit, yes... Not the company for which the card is used. The idea for that company is to get you to use the product in order to make money from that interaction in other ways. This is basic business, mate.

Epic’s statements here are informed by our actual experience and financials derived from: 1) operating our own digital software store for our own titles and for third parties 2) releasing Fortnite retail VBucks cards supporting 7 platforms This isn’t some napkin math.

Let's have some realtalk, Tim: Your digital storefront != Steam. A game with VBucks also isn't Steam. So, what you are saying is that you don't know Steam's actual costs and are assuming.

He knows how much steam costs Epic. 30%. It also costs me as a dev that much. That extra percentage can make or break a studio. Seriously, if devs get to pay their rent, people get to enjoy better games.

I don't think "propping up GOG" is really a good idea. GOG needs to stand in it's own merits, succeed or fail. Same with EGS, Steam, et al. What Epic could do is not bribe publishers into blocking supply from Epic's competitors. Let the stores stand on their own merit/features.

It seems like one, because no matter what feature steam has, you keep telling us that it wouldn't increase the overall cost to maintain the store Heck if it isn't so bad, then why doesn't epic just make a epic balance, inventory, profile customization, family share and remote -

          - play just like steam has? I'm willing to bet none of what I mentioned is planned, and you have no idea how much any of those would even cost you. Yet you say it barely increases. How do you know?
