Compare to the Unreal Engine and our first 3D game, for example. We spent heavily for 3.5 years to build it before it became a highly profitable business. We’re doing the same in funding the Epic Games Store.

Or more likely leasing an existing building. The analogy doesn't really fit (largely due to the relative absence of planned captive audiences) but every venture has start up costs yes. Most of them put most of those costs into building their service...

Sure investment repayability is long process, but always those cost are counted to lon sustainability of business. You shouldn't just forget it. Or you could, as in this case, if you have super high margin profitable business like Fortnite.
