If a store offered 12% and the features I'd definitely want to provide AND didn't tell me not to sell the game on other fronts gamers want to buy it on, I'd be all in favour! But EGS are actually further from that combination than the others. 1/2

why do we have to pay fees then in some countries?
-
The payment processing fees in several developing economies cover the extraordinary cost of payments there, which are often very high overhead, cash card based systems.

Sure you just separate all PR costs for exclusivity, free games, coupons, etc. from store costs and declare it's sustainable business. Have you, at least, count store development cost as "operating costs"?
-
These are up-front investments in launching a major new business. If it were a restaurant, we’d start by constructing a building for it. One wouldn’t say the restaurant wasn’t sustainable because the first year’s food sales didn’t pay for the building.

If I had a nickel for every time a company said "I know we said that, but circumstances have changed..." well, I wouldn't be rich but only because nickels are low in value. To be fair, sometimes the circumstances clearly did change. Nontheless trust in non-binding tweets is low.
