How would you refer the first element of an array?

no just a[0] because only those filthy casuals use object oriented languages :)

a.first() is just syntax. It is more readable than first(a) because it reduces nesting. You can have a.first() in a functional language as well.

head implies it's not random access though (you need to dereference head to get head->next)
