Steam certainly does block effective competition by locking down social features like friends so they only work in games launched by Steam. This ACTUALLY DIVIDES PC GAMERS unlike Epic’s store, which is just another icon.

This is the ultimate reason many die-hard Steam fans hate Epic’s store. They have massive amounts of data and social connections locked into Steam, which Steam blocks from working through other stores. It sucks for them, but the root problem is Steam, not Epic Games Store.

I hate your store because it only offers minimal basic functionality, because you buy the rights to games instead of letting me play where I want to, because if I buy more games than Im supposed to in a short period you lock my account, because it doesn't offer controller support

I’d like to understand this more. When you’re frustrated about a game on Epic, what are the most critical features from Steam that you miss? I mean, specifically: missing features that are seriously frustrating, rather than just mildly annoying.

Robust community features like forums (which you already said you won't do). Achievements. Universal controller support. TV mode. In home streaming. User reviews that aren't opt in (which you also said you won't do). If Epic had all this stuff people would be WAY less angry.

Not to mention: Organizing games via category. Wishlist. Shopping cart. Other stuff that should be basic for a software company like Epic. Why is it 1.5+ years later and most of this stuff still isn't implemented? Do you have so little confidence in your own product?

Great stuff here. I feel like with how Epic is setup. Its all infavor of developers but they didn't take any consideration to if end users would want to use their service. I remember reading somewhere that they just expected us to use their service because it was the only way

Pretty much. Tim himself said developers and publishers decide which store is dominant, not end users. Making me think Epic doesn't really care too much about the actual end users like Valve does.

Like Steam has its issues but I never feel like Valve is sleazy or doing predatory business practices like Epic has been doing.

It makes me think of the paid mods situation 5 years ago. That's hella sleezy. They released it on a Friday and Valve backed out by Monday night. They know the power of the consumer. Epic is going to have to learn that on PC we understand how powerful we are together as users

That situation was very unfortunate. Though the initial debut strategy was deeply flawed (discontinuing a bunch of beloved free mods), the effort could have jump-started a creator economy that might today have employed hundreds of thousands of indies who are otherwise left out.

This is pretty much how I feel about it. Hey, maybe if Epic Games Launcher ends up with decent feature parity to Steam (which it should have launched with. It's been over a year. Come on.) and can figure stuff like that out it'll make more people happy.

I don't need feature parity but I do need modern things. In fact, I would love it if Epic developed their own technology and made their store feature rich in its own way to set itself apart. Parity would basically make it Fortnite Steam vs Counter Strike Steam.
