@TimSweeneyEpic either this article is not an accurate summary of your speech or your message was confusing. if the summary is accurate, i'd say you do not have your finger on the pulse because there is no turning back time.https://www.ign.com/articles/epic-games-boss-says-all-politics-should-be-removed-from-games?sf117384849=1 …

i did. still there are quoted paragraphs in there that confuse me. every employee entitled to their own opinion? really? ANY opinion? what about-- and how do you stay neutral when one half of the public is culture cleaning communists and the other is neonazis

american youth is not calming down. it's like a life threatening immune response to perceived disease. the absence of a proper diagnosis does not prevent them from attacking all organs in order to weed out whatever has gone wrong. good luck staying neutral.

I think he's saying that the CxO and marketing department should maybe not try to solve (or worsen) society's ills. Because they fucking suck at it. Maybe leave that job to politicians and artists - including the artists they employ to make art.

and the article raises the good point that it has become IMPOSSIBLE to do that. blitzchung is a perfect example. when a government pressures you to take political action, when the public pressures you to fire a nazi or a bigot, you must comply.

people call you out on social media and journalists want to know your position. any cop-out sounds like you're ignorant to injustice. as much as i hate this climate, a CEO in 2020 must have a really good rounded political opinion that sits well with the people he wants to sell to

and i don't think it's hard as long as what you need to do doesn't threaten your operations; distancing yourself from assholes costs nothing and is a feelgood message all millennials can enjoy. not taking a stance has become too ambiguous, to the point of seeming sinister.

these are really weird times. you know i enjoy ambiguity as an expression of mysticism, but it seems any space intentionally left blank immediately turns into a graffiti wall for the politically paranoid to spray their dragons on to.

We disagree on a core issue. I believe companies and company leaders shouldn’t engage in politics, especially as a PR strategy, as it just adds to divisions. If games deal with social issues, it should be done by creatives in their work, and not by marketing departments.

And I believe companies should state their principles clearly, so that the public can check their actions against principles when a controversy arises. Companies acting without principle are far more open to manipulation by outside forces, and to mistrust due to the perception.

and iirc not engaging in politics is also a form of politics - if there is no desire to dampen any political sentiment, this strategy can end up as an amplification of _all_ political sentiments.

There is unfortunately no ground truth when it comes to political opinions IMHO (even though in our minds we all think we have the 'right' opinions). Accept one and you alienate the other half. Censorship only feels 'right' when you are shutting down opinions you disagree with.

except along many trenches, there are no halves here. there's a moderate but quiet majority and a quite vocal and frankly batshit insane minority. i don't find it difficult to pick a side.
