GameStar, a German PC publication, did a survey and found 43% of readers used the Epic Games store, vs 95% for Steam. Quite an amazing install rate after just 15 months! And GOG is doing very well too. (Credit to r/fe for finding this)https://www.gamestar.de/artikel/steam-ist-bei-euch-doppelt-so-beliebt-wie-der-epic-launcher,3354200.html …

Any chance of interoperability?
@GOGcom seems to be the only one pushing to bring back the "inter" in "internet". It's really frustrating not being able to even chat to users on other clients. The way it is now is vendor lock-in vs vendor lock-in. Doesn't that benefit Steam?1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
I don't imagine that platform holders are likely to push for new improved social features going forward. Discord basically made most of them worthless already. I guess were likely to see these platforms eventually work towards discord integration as an end goal.

Chat was just an example and again, we're still talking about vendor lock-in. Imagine you could only send gmail through the gmail app and only to other gmail accounts. An you have a friend who uses yahoo but in other to send email to him you need a yahoo mail account but you hate

Yahoo Mail. It really suck. Or maybe there is this new email provider with lots of nice features but you're stuck with Gmail because everyone is on gmail and you would have to build your contact database again and convince everyone to join the new service.

That's why the internet was created based on standard protocols. The "inter" is for interoperability. Interoperability in games means you can be on Epic and your friend on GOG and you two can play together. It means you don't lose your achievements, stats, contacts, etc.

That means that you choose your store based on price, discoverability, etc and your client based on quality, features, etc. What should be clear is that lack of interoperability is a business decision and not a technical impossibility.

That is the ideal, but it's not (and never will be) reality. You're right, it's possible for each platform holder to work together and develop a standard but doing so would directly hurt them, so only the weakest have incentive to do so.

That was precisely my point, Gog is doing it they have slightly better numbers than Epic in the article, even Origin and Uplay are not even close to Steam's numbers. The incentive is there for everyone but the market leader.

The interesting thing about game ecosystems is that there’s not a clear market leader - there are a lot of companies with market share in the 5% to 20% range. Thus I believe that all would benefit from interconnecting.

That would be all but Steam of course?
