Yikes, the creepy online ads that follow your offline real world activities finally caught up to me after successfully evading this for 5 years. It appears to be a Bluetooth information leak exploited by the Twitter app to display an Apple App Store ad.

I think it's inference based on data they have on you. I search for so many things which get churned through the ad machine and I get ads with solutions to a problem or need. The issue is that I have the solution via search, so the ad is useless but I notice it. Still creepy.

Ad tech vendors constantly try to sell the public on this idea that they can infer your future desires from random pieces of data they access legally. It's a clever cover story, but doesn't explain the results of directed experiments to establish there's actual eavesdropping.

I agree with that. I think there is more going on behind the scenes than we care to admit, and we peeked behind the curtain with Facebook ads. I wouldn't put it past *any* corp to eavesdrop for cash. People grant app permissions all the time cause we like tapping yes and agree

It's already an established industry. In this case, the cell phone in question had it's WiFi enabled. The restaurant has WiFi, the WiFi vendor collects MACs & other data and uploads it. Phone was on cell data, but Geo, MAC, & other info were matched. https://smart-places.org/mobile-location-analytics-opt-out/about-mobile-location-analytics-technology/ …

It'd be nice if we could do the eavesdropping ourselves, using our own daemon. Less inferring, more control, could monetize our privacy

I thought about that for a while. If there was a way to self monetize our data and select what we give out. We'd hand out bits and chunks as currency to purchase goods & services online. Sounds like some crazy startup pitch that might work if you add 'dark' and 'crypto' to it.

Agreed. I was on a call with a FB business friend. We discussed a topic. Within a few hours he got an ad for that topic despite never having searched for that topic - as it was new to him. "Microphone-Creepy"
