What do you call it when they chop down North Carolina forests, ship the wood on a diesel powered barge to Europe, then burn it in a power plant? “Green Energy”https://www.newsobserver.com/news/business/article238395173.html …

Unfortunately the fake environmental movement is on the verge of economically outgrowing the real one. Using whatever energy source is cheapest and putting the savings into conserving forests and wildlife habitat always wins over these greenwashing scams.

They’re also tearing down North Carolina Longleaf Pine forests (currently reduced to 1% of their historical range) to put in solar panels made in China from hydrocarbon fueled rare earth mineral strip mining and calling that “green energy” too.

People are sadly easy to manipulate. Give them something that sounds valid at superficial level. Make them feel like they are in control, make them feel righteous and they are going to follow. We moved so little from times of witch hunting mobs.

99% of the original range are already gone. But there is no "fake" environmental movement to blame for that. What now?

Longleaf in particular have been in a general recovery for the past 12 years since the real estate bubble ended thanks to conservation efforts. Now the primary carnage I see (at least in North and South Carolina) isn’t from home builders but solar farms.

Probably because people are afraid to speak up against "green energy", I mean, it's "saving world" right?

Maybe you should differentiate, what you mean with "green energy" to make a point.

I think we ought to judge energy sustainability by the direct cost per unit of energy produced plus the full cost of mitigating the environmental damage done by that unit of energy. Unfortunately I haven’t seen systematic attempts to do that.

Unfortunately energy is deemed good or bad through PR and lobbying, leading to absurdities. Duke Energy was pressured into not expanding the zero-emissions power plant that serves all of Raleigh including Epic, while the woods nearby are being chopped down and burned.

I'm not familiar with that case, but this kind of absurdities happen everywhere. But you need to adress that to ruling politicians, not to some kind of "fake" movement.

Politicians are a big part of this false movement, though. All they care about is getting elected because that's their career. So they listen to the mob, not the specialists, because there are fewer voting physicists than there are Twitter slacktivists.
