Guys, Google can access your health data without your knowledge or consent, but family members can't get medical updates on relatives "because HIPAA" and btw, you don't own your own health record. Happy Monday. We are living in the Upside-down.

What companies are making this possible by sharing this data with Google?

Because it probably "anonymizes" the data it collects

I’m suspecting this is confused reporting. Google as a cloud service provider may be providing storage for these medical organizations, but cloud service agreements do not allow them to use that data themselves. Those agreements are super tight and highly regulated.

Nope. Google is not storing the data. They are analyzing it, per the business relationship section of HIPAA. More in this piece. Also review Project Nightingale.https://www.wsj.com/articles/paging-dr-google-how-the-tech-giant-is-laying-claim-to-health-data-11578719700 …

HIPAA allows third party access to health data if the third party is considered a business associate. Google has full record access to names, DOB, etc. There is no anonymizing.

Thanks for clarifying. Do you know if this means Google can aggregate the data and use it for their own purposes, or if they are limited to using it to service the client medical organization? The former is terrifying, the later seems like a normal service provider scenario.

Google pitches the provider on what it can do (incl for its own purposes), & then the provider can decide to take the contract. Cerner, a provider, was creeped out & said no. Ascension said yes. Google won’t answer questions as to what they are doing w the data.

Meanwhile Google has also just purchased the data of 28 million Fitbit users and won’t say what they’re doing w/ that, either.

Technically, they can't use it for their own purposes, but tech companies have been known to lie before, and Google seems to both be zealously pursuing hosting health care data, and operating multiple sub-companies that need healthcare data to function.

I dont trust Google enough to have my private personal medical records in their hands. The ability to misuse it while denying it for years in court is horrifying.
