Microsoft already gained the trust of PC players without the need for Steam. The "Xbox Game Pass Ultimate" or "Xbox Game Pass for PC" drove a lot of PC gamers to their subscription model.

and they have gained further trust by going to steam. you wonder why so many people bought mcc on steam rather than just buying a 1 pound pass?

Seeing as Microsoft doesn't announce sales figures, we'll never know the true split between Game Pass and Steam. But we do know that over 43% of Steam users stopped playing it within the first month of purchase. It hasn't garnished much support from PC players even with Steam.

but thats the point, with how many people have already stopped playing they would have greatly benefited from buying gamepass for it anyway. Why would SO many people buy it on steam if it werent for how much consumers love the platform

Steam is a monopolistic platform. The storefront isn't, as it allows developers to sell their games anywhere - but all roads point to Steam. That's my personal issue with Valve. The storefront is fine, but they've structured their platform to be the monopoly.

To clarify, I have the same issue with the current direction EGS is going. I would prefer EGS compete against the market leader (Steam/Valve) until they can drive a more open market through their CDN versus forcing their platform being the profitable component.

To summarize: create the "Unreal Engine" of the storefront platform. Allow a unified distribution location with an expansive APIs (similar to Steamworks, but less cluttered). Rather than drive EGS as a profitable product, make it just a means of content distribution.

@TimSweeneyEpic I'm curious to hear some thoughts, but I am confident that the long-term direction of the EGS is either unknown or driven based on profitability. But a dev/publisher platform becomes... Complicated. Relationships and partner demands for features/function.

Epic provides a lot services to developers - an engine, a store, online services, content. For us, a store is another way to help devs connect with gamers, and doesn’t need to be a zillion-dollar business in order to move the industry forward.

Fortnite helped change the industry with cross-platform play and purchasing among 7 platforms. Our efforts with the store and with partners like Humble will expand, with the hope that eventually all platforms will respect customer purchases made on other platforms and stores.

But that requires a major jolt to the system, which has calcified with a few dominant stores collecting a 30% tax on everyone’s games.

I agree that the 30% cut doesn't make sense, considering most storefronts either have first party projects or platforms that provide more than enough to keep the profit split lower (EG/Fortnite, Steam/SteamVR and Games, GOG/CDPR Games, etc).

When running a business 30% makes totally sense when publisher want to use Steam. Almost none of the huge publishers with their own launchers skips Steam.

Other services tax game sales to provide a service. You bribe publishers to get games to get a piece of the pie that you feel you're missing out on. Got it.

So essentially, shock the market into a more uniformed domain for the PC market. I would argue the best step here would be for EGS to work deeply with GOG to ensure Galaxy 2.0 can be used as an integrated storefront and launcher.

You keep using the word tax like it's a bad thing. Let's look irl. Taxes pay for roads, schools, govt tech grants, corporation subsidies. So why is a tax a default bad thing? I look forward to this opportunity to have this convo with you
