Competing through content is still competing. Steam became as popular as it did because of the massive number of exclusive content to it, not because of features.

Funny, I thought Steam became popular because after having less than 100 games total until its 4th year, other games wanted to publish there and it evolved into a storefront only after that. The bigger point is Steam is a storefront NOW and its features are a core part of that.

Doesn't change that people came to Steam because of the content, even buying physical games required a steam account. Hardly anyone came to Steam because of features, but because that was where most gamers were at. In 2008, Steam had 604 games on the store, not less than 100.

Think about that causality... why did the first third-party games want to sell on Steam if that wasn't where people already were? And as always your timings are wrong. Steam's first year was 2003. Its fourth was 2006, not 2008, and it passed 100 in 2007. https://www.statista.com/statistics/552623/number-games-released-steam/ …

Steam started to sell games in oct 2004, third party games in 2005.2003 is just the beta period to play courier strike on, it wasn't a http://store.So  between Oct 2004 to Oct 2008 they had a little less than 600 games.

Now let's play the counting game: 1: 2004 2: 2005 3: 2006 4: 2007 Oh look at that, 2007 is its fourth year as a store. And you've failed to even acknowledge that third parties wanted in because the users were there by then.

Users were there because the content requiring steam was there to get customers. Half life 2 required Steam, Counter Strike required Steam, Darwinia required Steam, rag doll kungfu required Steam, Steam kept on getting more and more customers because games required Steam.

And that worked out so well for featureless alternatives from FilePlanet to GameSpy, didn't it? Or for the previous services like World Opponent Network that had those Valve games and others? Or for imitations like Desura? No of course it didn't. Steam won because it was good.

Lots of independent developers and gamers believe in and support Epic’s approach to store competition and getting better terms for developers. Eisberg is just the tip of the iceberg!

I was accused of being a Valve employee during the early days of Steam and there was great amount of vocal hate towards Steam. What can I say? I'm passionate about gaming and want what's best for it.

So stop supporting barebone stores who's buying exclusives? I've told Tim many times that I look forward to what EGS has to come at some point.

Yes Epic has been improving and they should keep improving but Steam will always be the default launcher of PC games. It is just too good and will continue to be even better in the years to come. EGS needs to step it up this year with a better platform for gamers

at the end of the day its all about the big game companies lining their pockets do you really thing an independent developer is going to bite the hand that feeds them when they can ride the coat tails of a big gaming company and take what ever crumbs they can get ?

I wonder how it would go with gamers if higher prices were on Steam/keys through authorized retailers than on Epic, to compensate for revenue share difference. A $60 game on Epic would be $75 on any 30/70 revenue share store. @TimSweeneyEpic has that been discussed among dev/pub

Look at you hiding the fact that authorised retailers (i.e. anyone selling keys) give Steam 0%, a mechanism Steam basically supported the creation of! I and many others would pay more for a better product. Shame that option doesn't exist. Why is that again? Oh. EXCLUSIVITY.
