I'm disappointed with the Facebook ad decision. Not a smart move for the company; targeting limits and a minimal standard on claims about opponents would represent a defensible, non-partisan and helpful position.

Alex, if you don’t trust Facebook, why would you want their ad team to serve as the world’s arbiter of political truth?

In all cases of potential abuse we have to balance the risks of centralized control of speech against the risks of the underlying speech. Companies can establish rules that limit their discretion and focus on mitigating the most important risks.https://twitter.com/alexstamos/status/1215312537945812993 …

Thanks for sharing your thinking. Personally I trust 2 billion people each making an individual decision about what to believe than one corporation deciding what political claims they ought to be able to weigh. The pressure to abuse such a censorship role will be overwhelming.

I mean, wasn’t that the TLDR of the whole enlightenment movement?

I mostly agree with you, and I think many in the media will come to regret their strident pushing for Facebook to take on so much power. That being said, all at-scale online speech is moderated to reduce various risks. These platforms would be completely unusable if not.

That's why I think the most important change would be limits on targeting, which reduces the incentive for campaigns to build massive data operations and to portray the candidate as a different person to thousands of special interest voting blocks.

Such limits are content-neutral, non-partisan and encourage a healthier political ad ecosystem without reducing individual choice.

That makes sense, thanks.

While I have you here, let me know if your team ever wants to talk about child safety. I know several people that might be useful on Fortnite's current challenges.
