The End of the Beginning https://stratechery.com/2020/the-end-of-the-beginning/ … The beginning of technology was about the shift from batched computing in one place to continuous computing everywhere. That era of paradigm changes may be over, which means the real changes are only beginning.

Not sanguine re: Stadia, eh? :-P

I think the bottleneck there was less bandwidth/latency and more just old-school consumer demand ;)

true, but this wasn’t an argument that everything will run on the cloud. Both sides matter

Also, while processing has physical limits as well, we are nowhere near the physical limits for processing, while we are relatively close to the ones for latency.

yet hyperscale cloud-based compute improves much faster still, and unlocks the possibility for monolithic mega simulations that you can't hope to run on or sync between local machines.
-
once bandwidth and latency become good enough to get a compelling experience to each of millions of thin clients connected to those massively scalable simulations, whole new experiences are made possible: instant access to deep and synced sims, collaborative world modification...

But even with, say, local and near-local compute fan-out (such as far-edge RAN containers and 5G slices w/QoS), it's just a bit better than what we're doing today. Short of a quantum entanglement NIC glommed onto each bus, I don't see us solving ALL of the inherent latency. ;)

How about putting less latency sensitive real-time graphics workloads like GI into the cloud? Or at least at the edge. Ties into Nvidia's EGX platform with low latency
#5G they want to deploy e.g. in Japan together with SoftBank.https://twitter.com/MacDaffy/status/1151915912993411073 …
