Big companies have long done this internally, for example with EA and Activision selling most of their products exclusively on their stores.

For smaller developers and publishers to get a better deal for themselves, they need to band together as Epic is facilitating by funding exclusives. We guarantee them revenue so that Epic takes the risk proportionally to the benefit Epic gets from growing a store.

To say that EA and Activision and Microsoft and Sony first party exclusives are okay but Epic third party partner exclusives aren’t is to say that only megacorporations should benefit from economies of scale in distribution, while the little guys forever pay 30% taxes.

That’s not what “bribe” means though. If you replace all of these inflammatory words with realistic descriptions of Epic, developer and publisher actions, it’s all just ordinary stuff business do to pursue mutually beneficial opportunities together.

Till we have automated self-service for developers, we are choosing the highest priority release opportunities. We prioritize exclusives, free game releases, and the most notable indie and triple-A titles. Some games that make sense as exclusives didn’t make sense otherwise.

How so? It’s certainly benefitting all of the developers and publishers whose games we’ve distributed so far. When we open up more widely, the 88%/12%revenue split will benefit even more game creators!

So if offering developers a higher cut is important to you, why not do what steam does? Steam allows developers to generate keys infinitely, that can be sold anywhere, and the developer gets 100% of the profit on that. Literally every cent.

We support this. You’ll find various Epic Games Store games also for sale on Humble, Green Man Gaming, and more coming. Epic doesn’t take a cut of that revenue.

I’ve never heard from a developer or publisher who WANTS keys for their games to be sold anywhere, because of the well known problems of fraudulent key resellers and grey marketers. Keyless sales integration is a much better approach.
