I thought I would do a then and now decade tweet. Turns out in early 2010 I was debating with @TimSweeneyEpic whether CPUs (Intel's Larabee) would replace GPUs. Set up by @CDemerjian. I think @Rajaontheedge and even @tom_forsyth would agree the GPUs won that one. The spork helpedpic.twitter.com/6dIElTTF33

I still believe in the convergence thesis. Was just off by one decade or maybe century!

I believe in programmability, like you, but I disagree on convergence. I think that we will see power-optimized cores for different markets. CPUs for low latency and control, GPU-like compute cores for throughput and fixed-function for compute heavy tasks like matrix multiply

If a CPU/GPU convergence happens it’ll be interesting to see which base ISA wins. x86-64 seems less likely now. RISC-V? ARM?

Seems unlikely. ARM don't make GPUs. RISC-V don't make anything.

With GPUs becoming more general, converting scratchpads into caches, adding scalar units, etc - there's certainly no doubt things are converging.

But at the same time some things are becoming _less_ general purpose. Specialized hardware for power intense stuff (e.g. image processing, feature extraction, ML). So I guess both are true?
