Epic is also planning to sever commercial ties with organizations which place paywalls in front of academic papers they didn’t fund.

Why stop with academic papers? Why not discontinue Unreal Engine and Fortnite for consoles as all three are charging for online play for third party games they didn't fund?

Like the now-lifted cross platform restrictions, that has always seemed wrong to me too. However, I approach it with patience and the realization that it’s in their interest to open up multiplayer to the more casually oriented non-paying players.

The issues are similar though since Microsoft (the only platform that paywalls Fortnite) pays vastly less in server costs to serve a non-paying Fortnite player than Epic pays, yet we do it because all participants benefit from the larger community.

I'm curious about something. Do you think the 30% all three charge for the price of a card/disc/digital download is enough to cover the cost of the user playing online?

I expect the marginal operating cost of servers and providing CDN bandwidth is in the range of 2-3% of gross game revenue. These aren’t game servers (which can be fairly expensive, and are run and paid for by developers), just accounts, e-commerce, downloads.

You don't mind if I archive this tweet, do you? Seeing as you're running servers for not just Fortnite, but Rocket League as well, I'd expect you'd have some insight on this, which is very rare to come across on this subject matter.
