Not that they don't get a penny, they have to _pay_ to have their papers be put on Elsevier. It's literal pay to pay mechanics in an academic system.

Then let me make it even worse. Editorial and peer-reviewing of the journals which contain these papers is done by the same academics who do not get paid for this work. (Or even get a discount on fees)

Yes, that’s what so exasperating about these paywalls. They only fund the administrators who match up the unpaid authors with the unpaid peer reviewers. Yet, this funding approach prevents the whole of the academic work from being easily accessible online!
