Originally, “Tar Heel” was a derogatory term, referencing the sticky mess of the North Carolina pine tar industry. It became a complement after Robert E Lee reportedly said “God bless the Tar Heel boys” after North Carolinans stuck to their position while others retreated.

I looked into this and the economics don’t make sense for pure nature conservation, as it’s not rare species habitat and costs around $40,000/acre, versus high priority conservation land in the mountains and coast for $2000-$6000/acre.
