2) I was having those issues in the early 90s with my Sierra games. It's always been a thing with PC games. Disparity in hardware and performance among different computer builds.

The situation at that point was far worse than the general PC compatibility issues that have always existed and still exist. Nowadays any PC you’ve bought in the past 3 years will play nearly any game adequately, even if not great. Back then, the Intel drivers didn’t even work.

So developers spoke up and eventually Intel fixed their issues. Problem solved! It’s counterproductive to point to a topical article like this as some sort of general worldview.
