A question has been puzzling me for a while: why does the mandatory exclusivity only apply to smaller indie or AA studios but you are more than willing to accept on your store big AAA titles that are also available elsewhere?

Presumably because its not mandatory, its part of a particular deal that those AAA titles aren't entering into.

His point is that it's mandatory for many indie games but not AAA. Quite a few have been told that exclusivity is their only option to be on the Epic store at all.

The question of what non-exclusives we can accept before we complete the tools needed to open up Epic Games Store widely is a function of release window, game uniqueness, dev/publisher catalog, and promotional opportunity. Indie vs AAA isn’t a big factor.

I’m reading. Funding exclusives is a perfectly reasonable way to grow a new store or distribution platform. See Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, Xbox, PlayStation. Competition between stores and services fosters development of new and better products and better economics for creators.

Funding them (from the beginning or very early)? Yes. Stealing them from other platforms right before their release? No.

“Stealing” implies that another store owned these titles, which was never the case. They belong to their developers and publishers, who created these games and have the freedom to distribute them as they wish.

"Another store" (always the same one...) once had the right and expectation of ability to distribute said titles. Gamers who'd backed or wishlisted them had the expectation of being able to buy them. You're principally depriving both expectations. Again, how's Shenmue III doing?

And you play on their weak morale and ethics towards customers by offering loads of money so they could redirect their games to your archaic, monopolistic store.

That is some heavy mental gymnastics. You know exactly what I meant. Improve the launcher, fund some great games from the start, fix the security and people will come.

They are already improving the launcher. Why does it matter when Epic helps fund a game? They don't have an issue with security, no more than anyone else like Steam or GOG.

Tim these games had literally already announced they'd be on Steam then you just run in and take them from people who already had pre ordered it in some cases you have contributed in the biggest shit show in kickstarters by stealing Shenmue 3 from a promised Steam release
