We write numbers backwards as a result of importing right-to-left Arabic numbers into left-to-right Latin writing without reversing them. Thus the need to right-justify columns of numbers to have their place values align, and perform addition right-to-left.

Not a programmer, eh? If number equalled number rewards, then higher would be better. Rather, the number indicates an offset, in this case from the winning position. The winner should have zero offset from the winning position, while the runner up should have an offset of 1, etc.

0 is the first number. 1 is the first number distance 1 from 0. Difference between absolute and relative offset.
