Great news for @UnrealEngine developers! 1- Monthly marketplace giveaways will continue for another year (and we will continue to cover them!) 2- Epic released the final assets from the Infinity Blade series, for free, $4m value. https://www.gamefromscratch.com/post/2019/10/31/Epic-Unreal-Giveaway-Continues-Another-Year.aspx … #gamedev #UnrealEnginepic.twitter.com/UkPqs9KH1Y

Would love to use any of these assets in Godot, but its pretty difficult to find royalty free PBR stuff that you can use in any engine.

Perhaps @TimSweeneyEpic would consider changing the license on Unreal owned content to be usable in a non-commercial capacity by open source projects. It would basically be free PR for them. Never hurts to ask. ;)

Interesting idea. I think non-commercial and open source are now fully orthogonal as an MIT-licensed project can be sold commercially for example. We’d be happy to consider some sort of proposal for a Creative Commons type non-commercial license for some of the content.

Perhaps somebody here could propose some specific Epic-created asset packs from the Unreal Engine marketplace for this kind of release.

          FYI, Epic authored UE4 content is here: https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/en-US/profile/Epic+Games?count=80 … Pinging some of the open source 3D engines I think could benefit from this: @GodotEngine @xenko3d @PlayCanvas @babylonjs @threejs_org @MonoGameTeam @CasualEffects @ogre3d_official @WaveEngineTeam

CC BY-NC 4.0 seems like a compatible license. Would enable redistribution with attribution, while preventing commercial usage. Should enable tutorials, testing and demonstration while not being monetized and cannibalizing sales.

I concur, CC BY-NC 4.0 would be the way to go to restrict commercial usage while allowing non-commercial use anywhere and redistribution (under the same terms). And assets should be dual licensed, so users choose either the "commercial use in Unreal Engine" or CC BY-NC.

A non commercial dual license would be extremely useful for us, and as an open source project it would also allow our community to experiment on new rendering techniques (that later other technologies, be it open or commercial, can adopt, since all we do is MIT licensed).

We've also seen individuals making great use of CC-BY & CC-BY-NC models for virtual spaces to hang out in online in @ByHubs, often from @Sketchfab with their very clear licensing:https://help.sketchfab.com/hc/en-us/articles/201368589-Downloading-Models#licenses …

Probably usable only for content creators, but it may also help FOSS devs to experiment on techniques that commercial tools can't do
