Do you know what steam doesn’t do that every other store does? Warranty hardware.
Steam controllers Steam link Helped with HTC vive Steam console Valve index
I’m talking about the fact that when your pc stops working, valve does not replace it or repair it like all those other 30% stores do. You build or buy your pc elsewhere and steam doesn’t warranty the motherboard, cpu, ram, gpu or any other aspect of the machine running the game.
Conversely, Sony and ms and Nintendo and Apple and Samsung all sell their devices at the lowest they can, especially in the case of the consoles, which are often sold at a loss, relying on software sales to make up the difference. Steam just installs to your pc and takes the pay.
All of steam’s features are a very small cost, and the company is extremely - extremely - small in comparison to Sony or Ms or Nintendo, with about 350 employees, while the console makers have more than that on tech support alone, let alone all of the other departments.
When you see an ad that says Xbox or PS4 for a game coming out, guess who paid for that ad. It advertises to all the game is releasing to, but the company whose logo is in there, is who paid for it. When is the last time you saw Gabe paint a building in LA or run a Super Bowl ad?
Therefore, with just these few examples, with just this tip of the iceberg to consider, valve’s 30% is egregious and absurd.
@TimSweeneyEpic you wanna add anything to this or correct anything? In case I have gotten anything wrong here?
Agreed, the costs of running a PC store aren’t comparable to the costs of running an entire console platform that uses software revenue to subsidize marketing and often subsidize hardware.
What are your thought if we compare Play Store and Valve ? They took 30% each one but I (only my feeling) think that Play store doesn't do much more than storage, bandwith and some "protection".
Play store, like Steam, may be doing the “they charge 30 so we will too” thing. Or, chrome books and pixel may be very costly for them, and they do have a massive bandwidth bill. I don’t know enough to have an opinion on them directly there, I would like more information as well.
