Totally according to Tim, I speak from my own experience having developed my own 3d engine, every day is more complicated by the number of components, platforms, consoles, # UE4 is a masterpiece because it has everything and you just have to worry about your project 

The theme of the voxels is very interesting, one of my developments already quite old and surely obsolete was to transform the mesh into voxels, do you remember the 1999 game Outcats that supposedly said it was developed with voxels?
I know you can't create/code Unreal Engine alone it's like making Avatar alone etc but I mean is it possible to create like a 3d shooter room with all the graphics techniques in it as a portfolio example, shadow, light, reflection etc not having the plugins around the engine
P1) But how someone can learn 3d graphics and hope to improve the "cutting edge" I mean in term of graphics beauty etc if a modern engine is beyond a single programmer reach ? can't 1 guy improve just the rendering in 1 aspect ? (without the tools, physics or others parts)
P2) You and Carmack did it in a way in the 90's no ? I mean for example back in the dos days everyone at the time thought a game like Doom was impossible to create... is it possible for 1 programmer to excel at just rendering or you really need a big team cause of scale ?
