Was out with Intel engineers, discussing the theorized end of Moore’s law while hiking at the end of the world. This is the new section of Armageddon. It’s from King Solomon’s time. There are a total of 26 layers of ruins going back 9000 years.pic.twitter.com/joLJIXOge9

What’s your philosophy about Moore’s law? Do you think we’ll ever be able to get around it?

Silicon engineers have never been able to see a certain path to more than 4x above current levels, so we can only speculate beyond that.

My guess is that electronics will slowly approach an asymptotic limit around 5x-10x current performance levels, which we won’t surpass until we figure out how to build integrated circuits from >1-gate quantum components.

In my opinion, short-term quantum computing and in the not too distant future we will use biotechnological components without any doubt.

so assuming we have the top GPU right now, but 10 times better. What resolution can I run a maxed out Fortnite at with 144fps?

I'm not as optimistic. At this point greater performance can only be realised with aggressive parallelization because we're nearing the limits of practical CPU frequencies and the only improvements seem to be core increases. Might improve with faster core-to-core communication.

Spintronics and strained sapphire substrates (say that five times fast) are also a possibility. 3D CPUs seem more likely near-term as solving heat dissipation seems simpler than programming any kind of useful quantum algorithm. And what happened to optical computing?

one of the issues is that as conductors and features get smaller and closer together, electrons may teleport from a circuit to an adjacent one. bad for digital computing. what if we instead built chips for probabilistic computing? rendering is a probabilistic process.

for rasterisation and ray tracing this uncertainty due to quantum tunneling could result in something as benign as a noisy shadow or a form of anti aliasing or smoothing. do you think this sort of technology could be possible?
