Will be interesting to see how long Epic can subsidize that 88/12 split from Fortnite microtransactions. If the player base drops by 50% will they be able to maintain it?https://twitter.com/TimSweeneyEpic/status/1167101266432090116 …

The store’s transaction economics aren’t subsidized by Fortnite. Operating costs, such as payment processing, customer service, and bandwidth, are in the 5-7% range, out of the 12% store fee.

I shall happily eat crow if 5 years from now the split remains the same and Epic is no longer buying exclusives and Fortnite is not the primary source of revenue. But color me skeptical that if you scale to the size and functionality that Steam is your operating costs don’t rise

Even if your operating costs grew to 12% and the Epic Game Store could never make money as long as Fortnite is successful it sounds like Epic wouldn’t care. Using Fortnite money to create an ecosystem that no one else can compete in scares me a bit.

I think we’ll see a lot of positive evolution in stores now that the shift is underway. Across all platforms, digital software stores are a $100,000,000,000 worldwide business. If store fees go down from 30% to 12%, stores will still be very profitable.

The $100 billion number is the profit that these stores are making or revenue? I don’t deny that a shift could be positive my fear is it is too far in the other direction perhaps. I fear the ride sharing effect where you kill the existing industry but find out you can’t profit.

$100 billion = total gross revenue of all software stores across all platforms worldwide.

What shift? the only difference I've seen is that you've been buying up games instead of actually making a store that people want to use. And even then, what about when your store gets up to snuff? Universal could saves, forums, mod support, ect.

Profitable enough to still cover things like forums, widespread cloud saves, gifting, mod distribution? All the things seen as MVP these days, but not currently available on EGS?

Or as stated in the quoted post above certain publishers in question, Ubisoft, will demand more money from users from countries outside US/EU and then refuse to answer 'why' and just tell those users to 'use a discount code'.

Your 12% cut is totally pointless when you are only willing to sell exclusive game It's like admitting that lower revenue cut don't actually attract that much developers or publishers They only matter thing is throwing loads of money in front of them

Yes but you already burned your capital when you did a reach about exclusives. Hell even when it toned down you didn't want to give smaller devs multi-platform availability which was the crux of the issue. I don't know how you still don't understand that exclusivity is the issue.

Instead of using the money to steal games that were funded by the public, why not build better platform and product so that people will actually want to use it over Steam. People are already highlight the differences between each platform. Meaning the target demographic ...
